| We traveled a long way around
the beltway and navigated down never-before-seen streets.
Finally, we arrived at the school and found ourselves among
a few fans from Gwynn Park. Ron spotted the booster
club food booth and indulged in a tasty hot dog.
None of the fans were concerned about the
outcome of the game. As predicted, Gwynn Park dominated
the floor and our recruit, Charmaine, played just a few
minutes. It was a chance for her fellow players to
get some playing time. Charmaine seemed like a typical
high school girl. She giggled, played with her hair,
and talked with her teammates on the bench. Ron and
I raised our eyebrows!
Four years later, I had a chance to tell
Charmaine this story at a Rebounder Social. As I related
the tale and complimented her on the progress she made during
her college career, my eyes welled up with tears of pride.
I realized that my attendance at the high school game had
started an emotional attachment; an attachment I didn’t
even know I had until that moment.
Rebounders
should go to our local recruits’ games. A few
tears, four years later, make them worthwhile.
