JOURNAL ENTRY NO. 10:  Vocal Fans

Rebounders are enthusiastic supporters of the best program in women's basketball.  That is why so many of us bring our friends and families to the games.

Soon after I became a Rebounder, in the late 1980s, I started asking my friends to join me at a game.  Usually I did not get a very enthusiastic response, but eventually some friends came---among them Fred and Marian Smith.  I knew they were Redskin fans and enjoyed sports, but I had no idea they would jump into the Rebounders with so much gusto.

After that initial game, they became members and season ticket holders and were at almost every game.  They loved the Socials in the Small Gym and quickly became friends with other Rebounders, Coach Weller, the assistant coaches, the players, and some parents.

After trying out several seats in the stands, they decided to sit in the front row behind the scorekeepers' table and Nick, who was the announcer at the time.  I sat with them on made-for-college-students, wooden, folding chairs.  Although a little uncomfortable, we were right in the middle of the action.

Over time Fred and Marian became two of the most vocal fans.  They cheered for the team and often Fred was heard yelling at the refs.  At one game, the referee, John Morningstar, was talking to the scorekeepers right in front of us.  Fred took the opportunity to give Mr. Morningstar some advice on how to call the game.  Venom flowed from the eyes of the referee as he glared toward Fred.  Not a word was spoken, but the message was clear.

We howled with laughter and Fred was as proud as a peacock.  He obviously had gotten to the ref.  Fred had arrived!
