July 17, 2010….Cherry Valley Music Studio, owned by Rebounder Charles Stier, was chosen to be the exclusive North American point-of-sale (sole distributor) for Wurlitzer Reform-Boehm Clarinets (Germany).  Congratulations, Charles!....Darlene Lehr, Nita McVeigh, and Sharma Wright were spotted having a late lunch at Seibel’s Restaurant

  ….and Sharma and Julie Ponting got together recently to entertain Julie’s parents, from a small town in Indiana.  Sharma, of course, played the piano and Julie the oboe….Ron McKee was in Michigan visiting his family ….Jan McIntyre celebrated her retirement with friends from far and wide….Fred and Marian Smith celebrated their 63rd wedding anniversary on June 14!  Congratulations!....Harriet Maier and Mary Barnes are in Cape Girardeau, Missouri visiting their mother….


May 14, 2010….Alex Chambers, who is writing a book about his experiences last summer when he visited every WNBA city to attend a game, asked Jackie Edwards if she would mind if he used a photo of him and her in his book.  She said she would be honored, and he is going to use it in the section about WNBA  fans
  ….Gloria Hong and George Izumi attended the Terrapin Club's Terps on Tour at Dave and Buster's on May 4.  Gloria was the lucky winner of two courtside seats to a women's 2010-2011 basketball game….Daphne Lee, Peggy Martin, Karla Anderson and her husband, Dave,  and Marilyn and Obie O’Brien were hobnobbing with Coach Frese and her husband Mark Thomas at the Terps on Tour event in Hagerstown on May 13th.  None of them won courtside seats….And speaking of Daphne Lee---Daphne and Her Amazing Mini-Golf Committee are hard at work putting the final touches on THE BIG EVENT.  If you haven’t signed up, do it today….and be sure to check out the date of Pete and Mary Ruth Chapin’s Crab Feast on the website.  Put it on your calendar!....And, from the past, this story is floating around---Coach Dottie McKnight, former head coach of Maryland Women’s Basketball, once did the 'shuffle off to Buffalo' for her team...wonder if she can still tap dance?

Friday, April 2, 2010….Greg Fremeau, one of the many true Maryland Women’s Basketball fans, has turned himself pink on Facebook until he reaches his $1500 goal in contributions for his Ride Across Maryland event to fight breast cancer. And while you’re in the mood to donate, please send your thoughts and prayers to Marian and Fred Smith who continue their battles against cancer.  Fred is recovering from his most recent surgery, but they both miss all the Rebounders and your prayers would be appreciated….Harriet Maier has sold her townhouse in Montgomery Village and is moving into a Senior Residence---right across the hall from her sister, Mary Barnes.  Rebounders stick together!....Sadly, our women are not in the Final Four, but some Rebounders still plan to go to San Antonio---Daphne Lee, Peggy Martin, Marilyn and Obie O’Brien, and Ron McKee.  Anyone else?....Jan McIntyre has officially retired and is hoping to be a volunteer at the Humane Society….Ed Pickens is celebrating his 80th birthday this Spring.  Congratulations, Ed!....

Monday, March 8, 2010….The Rebounders are exhausted after a rip-roaring weekend in Greensboro.  All that foam-finger-waving just wears us out….but thanks to Kim Tuza, our fearless North Carolina Radical, we were well prepared to make a statement at the games….and wasn’t that Pam Prather, our Secretary, handing out newspapers to rattle as the dookies were introduced at the beginning of the Duke/NC State game?….Gloria Hong, of course, had her clever signs, “Nothing Could Be Fina Than Beating Carolina” and “Bedevil Duke”….Jennifer Newlin taught everyone our new theme song, “We are the Terrapins….”
  Barbara O’Hara, our Scrapbook Coordinator, reports that things are going well with the scrapbookers….Mary Ruth Chapin, our Vice-President, was out in Portland, Oregon visiting her daughter prior to the ACC Tournament, but made it back just in time….Barbara Brady still works a few hours a week at Macy’s….and if you’re going to Africa, ask Marlys Becker for tips.  She has traveled in many African countries including Ethiopia, Kenya, South Africa, and Botswana.


Sunday, February 28, 2010... For all the Rebounders who traveled to dook, the trip was a blast. Even the Washington Post mentioned our foam fingers….

  Sonny and his wife just returned from a five week journey through southern India and Sri Lanka.  Welcome home!....Fred Smith is scheduled for more surgery in March.  Details later….Ron McKee made arrangements for his senior living home to bring several residents to the game against Florida State….Marilyn O’Brien just returned from a writers conference in San Miguel de Allende, Mexico….Markus and Tyler Thomas seemed to be enjoying the game on Sunday….and wasn’t it nice to hear about Chris Weller being inducted into the Hall of Fame.  Congratulations!


Wednesday, January 21, 2010….Gloria Hong, our photographer on the scene, did a great job recording the bus trip to North Carolina.  Thanks, Gloria!....Ron McKee was also on the job in North Carolina taking pictures of the players for our scrapbookers….Pam Prather, Karla Anderson, and Kim Tuza were shown on ESPN2….If anyone taped the NC game, Pam Prather would love a copy.  Contact homewithpam@aol.com ...

  Marian Smith reports that Fred is recovering from his bone cancer surgery at the rehab facility at the Jewish Community Center in Rockville.  And their son, Wayne, is also recovering from cancer surgery.  Prayers for all the Smiths would be appreciated….And, always in the know, Marilyn O'Brien, received The Dribbler Award for disclosing where the deGrecks went on their cruise...



Thursday, January 13, 2010….The Dribbler spotted Gerri Grove, Monica Brown, Pete and Mary Ruth Chapin, Barbara and Mike O’Hara, and Mark Thomas on TV during the great victory over Virginia in Charlottesville.  Who else was there?....Mary Barnes, Harriet Maier (and her daughter Ann Marie), and Ron McKee watched the game from Marilyn and Obie O’Briens ….Kim Tuza, our North Carolina Radical Rebounder, went to the NCSU game and cheered on our girls….Fred Smith made it through his surgery last Friday and Marian reports that he is recovering in the ICU at Holy Cross Hospital.  Prayers are still needed….Michelle Yam, Marilyn O’Brien and other friends were spotted having tea in a fancy restaurant in Annapolis….Sharma Wright continues to help her mother in Baltimore in between piano playing, games and web mastering….

  The Mini-Golf Tournament Committee, led by Daphne Lee, met in the Women’s Basketball office with Jen Elkenoh recently.  Other committee members present were:  Todd Carton, Marilyn O’Brien, Pam Prather, Sharma Wright, Karla Anderson, Steve Hyman, and Julie Ponting.  The date of the event is now June 6 so put it on your calendar now….



Friday, January 8, 2009….Judy Safchick’s great niece, Natalie, was very excited to be at the game on Sunday against St. Joe's.  She was surprised to meet Coach "B" and ask questions of Lori Bjork!!!! She was so so happy and proudly told her Mom and Dad how lucky she felt!!!! Judy sends her thanks to all the Rebounders and all they do for the Terrapin Community.  It was a day both Judy and Natalie won't forget for a long long time….
  Fred and Marian Smith hope all the Rebounders had a happy holiday season.  They have really enjoyed the games this year and they especially like the chance to talk to their friends….Do you have a new year’s resolution?  See it posted here.  Send it to the Dribbler at thedribbler@umrebounders.com. 

December 20, 2009….Barbara Brady’s daughter in Colorado keeps track of her Rebounder mother by checking umrebounders.com.  She’s been happy to see plenty of pictures of her mother and also other relatives….Bonnie Miller was the lucky Facebook winner at the Minnesota game on December 3.  She received a free women’s basketball t-shirt!....Carol Carr and her new puppy, Wrigley, will be accompanying Sharma Wright on a visit to her mother in Baltimore.  Carol often visits the elderly with her dogs….Fred Smith is scheduled for surgery on January 8….
 

Obie O’Brien is happy to announce that his youngest daughter graduated from UNLV this week.  And she has a job!....From wonderful Jen Elkonoh comes this news---At the suggestion of University Archivist and Rebounder, Anne Turkos, the UM

Libraries will save $100,000 a year in energy and maintenance costs by decommissioning the escalators in Hornbake Library. They will stop running once the Department of Operations and Maintenance has identified a safe and attractive way to block off the area.  Anne’s idea was recognized as part of the University’s “Ideas that Work” campaign….Rebounders are more than fans,they are doers too!



December 6, 2009….Gerri Grove is not only a Maryland fan and a Mystics fan, but she is also a Whitman High School Girls Basketball fan.  Recently she was spotted at Ledo’s near Montgomery Mall after a game….

    Steve Kornblatt, one of the Rebounders’ photographers, loves his IPhone….and Marilyn O’Brien was the first one to turn in the destination of the deGreck’s cruise---the Caribbean---and also discovered that their next cruise is to Alaska.  She wins a Spirit Button!  (See Nov 20, 2009 entry for details.)….Michelle Yam is out of the hospital and on the mend….


December 4, 2009….Ron McKee has a new neighbor at Ingleside in Rockville and Ron brought him—Ed McCann—to the Minnesota game….Michelle Yam is back from several weeks of business travel and was seen at the Drexel and Minnesota games and also out Irish dancing and, then, ended up in the hospital for a brief stay.  She should be home on Saturday….Karla Anderson thinks Daphne Lee needs a lot of praise for making awesome buttons for everyone including one of each player for her scrapbooker.  Karla is thankful this season for “my TERP Family of Rebounders.” She spent Thanksgiving with her in-laws at their house in Williamsport MD, but claims she was not one of those crazy shoppers on Friday.  She, however, admits she is a crazy Terp fan….

    Carolyn Cowles has been busy recently due to her position as Treasurer of her local senior center.  A huge budget to manage….Kathleen Restorff was proudly showing pictures of her grandchildren at the Minnesota game….and Debbie Cooley was proudly showing pictures from her Antarctica adventure…. 


November 27, 2009….I hope you all had a great Thanksgiving Day.  Something we have to thankful for is a great team to support and wonderful fans to celebrate with.  It’s great to be a Rebounder….Here is the list of what some of you were doing on Thursday….Todd Carton, our prez, was with family in Atlanta (but feeling bad about missing two games)…. Kim Tuza, head of the Radical Rebounders in Greensboro, NC, cooked dinner for ten….Fred and Marian Smith were with their children and grandchildren and they hope all of you had a wonderful Thanksgiving….Harriet Maier and Mary Barnes enjoyed the day with Harriet’s daughter, Ann Marie, and Mary’s daughter, Mary Barnes (a former player), and her son, Robert Barnes….Nancy Vieira was at home cooking….Darlene Lehr and Nita McVeigh were home and, of course, Darlene cooked up a storm….Marilyn and Obie O’Brien spent the day at a friend’s house near Bethany Beach, Delaware….Charles and Molly Stier were in South Carolina with his family….Jim and Carolyn Cowles stayed at home and two sons were with them….Mary Ruth, the chef, and Pete Chapin celebrated with Mary Ruth’s mother, Connie….Ron McKee ate a great meal at a friend’s home in northern Virginia.... ….Sounds like the Rebounders had a great Thanksgiving.... 

   

And wasn’t it nice to see Yemi’s Mom visiting from England for the Holiday. Coach Langley’s Mom traveled North and was spotted at the Howard game….A reliable source informs me that Coach Langley had kp duty on Thanksgiving day...

November 20, 2009….Bonnie Miller’s husband is home from the Middle East.  Whew!....Carol Carr is the proud owner of a new puppy, Wriggley ….Our former president, Obie O’Brien, FINALLY made it to a game this season and was seen shaking hands and hugging babies….Michelle Yam has been on business in San Diego….Dave and Helen have been reminiscing about their days in New York City when they went to see Tommy Makem and The Clancy Brothers….

November 15, 2009….The season is officially OFFICIALLY underway and so are the Rebounders.  The red-clad group showed up at Sir Walter Raleigh’s before the UNCC game.  Spotted were:  Karla Anderson, Bonnie Miller, Ruby Webb, Jackie Edwards, Greg Fremeau, Sharma Wright, Daphne Lee, Peggy Martin, Jennifer Newlin, Steve Hyman, Marilyn O’Brien, Todd Carton, and Arnie and Nancy Rome. 

  Speaking of the Rome’s---they are the proud new grandparents of Elyssa Pearl, born October 23….Watch the website for future pre-game gatherings….McKenna, Harriet Maier’s granddaughter, and Matthew, Kathleen and Jim Restorff’s grandson, were at the game….Mary Barnes greeted Jade Perry with a big hug….Jackie Edwards continues to recover from her knee replacement surgery….

November 11, 2009….Ron McKee, the Rebounders’ official photographer-on-the-ground, was IN a photo published in the Nov/Dec issue of Bethesda.  He was helping promote the amenities of Ingleside, his senior residence in Rockville.  Check it out on page 238....

  Mary Barnes continues to get good reports after her knee surgery….Her sister, Harriet Maier, is still recovering from surgery on her rotator cuff….Debbie Cooley leaves in a few days for Antarctica via Buenos Aires, Argentina.  Bon Voyage!….Darlene Lehr and Nita McVey are having a couple rooms painted in their house in Milford, Delaware….Jan McIntyre has been attending MCPS retirement planning meetings….


November 5, 2009….The season is underway---finally!  And the Rebounders were out in full force at our opening game….several of us brought friends and family….Mary Ruth Chapin brought her mother, Connie; Marilyn O’Brien (just home from Argentina) brought her sister, Judy Ashley, who is joining the Rebounders this year (Welcome, Judy!!); Helen and Ed Pickens brought their grandson (many of us remember when he was just a little boy).

  Fred and Marian Smith were accompanied by their son Wayne and his wife Joy; Shirley and Pete Mackessy are both healthy and have traveled to Hampton VA to see their grandson, to Florida to see Pete’s brother, and to a B and B in Boonsboro, MD to celebrate their anniversary….With 2 grandaughters expecting, Ruby Webb is to be a great grandmother twice next year!!!....Pam Prather, our Secretary, spent a week at Disney World….Pam got home just in time to meet with Todd Carton, our President, and Marilyn O’Brien to work on rewriting the Rebounder By-Laws….Sharma Wright, our Webmaster, and Karla Anderson celebrated their birthdays recently.  Sharma is 21 and Karla 20---that’s what they told me!

October 18, 2009...Not to brag, but we have some very talented Rebounders amongst us. Gloria Hong and George Izumi won quite a few medals in the Maryland Senior Olympics this year...including a Gold Medal in tenpin bowling!....
  And who knew that Obie O'Brien is quite the Irish dancer or that Julie Ponting is a budding oboeist....it would be nice to hear her play in next summer's recital!...Marilyn O'brien, who almost never misses an event, was mia today. I heard she is vacationing in Argentina....searching for tortugas?


October 12, 2009….Good News!  For all you Rebounders who plan to have knee replacement surgery in the future (seems to be the thing to do!)....

  Chimere Stevenson, our Student Representative on the Executive Committee, aspires to be a Sports Medicine Doctor….More good news!  Another Rebounder Radical has been born---Kim Tuza’s new grandson, Caleb, arrived on October 6.  Congratulations Kim!....And---Harriet Maier is recovering nicely from her surgery….

October 6, 2009….Cindy Skiles and Jean Martelli received a note from Kristi Toliver thanking them for all their hard work on her scrapbook….Spotted at Sol Azteca in Olney Maryland---Sharma Wright and Marilyn O’Brien. Witnesses reported that they were deep in talk and paper shuffling in addition to eating lots of good Mexican food….
  Fran Bernhards and Margie Holt plan to go to overnight away-games at Duke and North Carolina….Peggy Martin and Daphne Lee traveled to the Eastern Shore for a visit with Darlene Lehr and Nita McVeigh.  Darlene treated them to homemade Pennsylvania Dutch Chicken Noodle soup, which brought back memories for Peggy who is from Pa….Pete Mackessey got lots of Rebounder spirit buttons as a gift for his granddaughter.  If you want some too, contact Daphne Lee….

October 1, 2009….Justin Maxwell’s grand slam this week in the bottom of the ninth with two outs on a 3-2 pitch was pretty amazing and resulted in a Nats victory, but that’s nothing compared to Steve Hyman’s TWO (that is T-W-O) hole-in-ones at a golf outing---the Miniature Golf Tournament and Crab Feast hosted by the Ed Block Courage Award Foundation...Also seen at this event were Leslie Hyman, Peggy Martin, and Daphne Lee….Bonnie Miller’s husband, Bob, is home from Afghanistan for a brief visit; then back to the battlefield.  Thanks for all your efforts on behalf of our great country….Harriet Maier is scheduled for surgery on her rotator cuff on October 8….Ron McKee’s two sisters from Michigan are here visiting him for a few days….
  Fred and Marian Smith traveled to Charles Town, West Virginia recently to learn about the hanging of John Brown (not to gamble!)
 

September 23, 2009….Sharma Wright, our webmaster, who happened to be in the WBB office recently, was the first Rebounder to hear that 6’2” Diandra Tchatchouang of France has been cleared by the NCAA to play on our team this year….Bob Hart is recovering nicely from his recent surgery
  ….Jackie Edwards will receive her second new knee on October 6….Mary Barnes’ son, Robert, who plays in a tango band based in Minneapolis, will be in town this weekend with his wife and children.  They will be visiting Mary in her beautiful new apartment where she continues to recover from knee replacement surgery (lots of new knees among the Rebounders!)…. Karla Anderson was spotted on the beach at Ocean City, but made it back in time to kiss Testudo’s nose last Saturday ….Barbara Brady and Nancy Williamson grow the best strawberries in the world according to inside sources….

September 18, 2009….So many Rebounders were sighted at the Mystics vs Indiana game at Comcast Center on Thursday, September 17, The Dribbler can’t mention them all.  However, Pam Prather, the Rebounders’ Secretary, gets special kudos for bringing a sign welcoming returnees---Marissa, Crystal, Kristi, and Laura….Also spotted in the stands were Rebounders Brenda Frese and Mark Thomas; former players Crystal Washington and Ashleigh Newman; and former coach Jeff Walz!….
  Recently, Elaine and Nelson Gibson and Harry McGowan were seen at the Varsity Grille twice in one day….Marilyn and Obie O’Brien recently celebrated their grandson’s second birthday in Las Vegas….and Judy Tarter will be out there vacationing later in September after a quick work trip to Albuquerque….Michelle Yam will also be in Las Vegas soon celebrating her father’s 81st birthday….Ron McKee’s two sisters from Michigan will be visiting him in late September.  He has turned them into Maryland fans….and did you know that Arnie Rome likes peanuts????

September 15, 2009….More Mystics sightings---Judith and Eileen (also known as the Basketcases), Monica Brown , Gerri Grove , Pam Prather, Barbara Brady, Jackie Edwards, Nancy Williamson , Sue Loftus….Daphne Lee, Peggy Martin, and Jennifer Newlin watched the recent Mystics Auction and were proud as peacocks when Marissa Coleman’s jersey brought in $3600 and lunch with Crystal Langhorne and Marissa $2000
  ….Mary Barnes is out of rehab and continues to improve at her new apartment….President Todd Carton is back from a western vacation and is gearing up for the General Membership meeting tonight.

September 1, 2009….Spotted at the Mystics game on Sunday, August 30:  Pam Prather and her mother, Ron McKee, Jackie Edwards (who recently got Billie Jean King’s autograph at a Mystics game).  Who else was there?....
 

Marilyn and Obie O’Brien are back to teaching this fall---Marilyn part time at the Academy of the Holy Cross and Obie subbing in MCPS….Patrice Milani and Judy Turnbaugh visited Mary Barnes in the rehab facility where Mary is recovering nicely from knee replacement surgery….Harriet Maier is a volunteer at Oasis, an education program for seniors... Greg Fremeau is wowed by the Rebounder Radicals idea and sends good luck wishes to Pam and Kim...go get 'em! Carolinians in Terp Red...what a concept!


August 25, 2009….Big Announcement!  The US Government has announced a National Holiday on Monday, September 7th so everyone has time to celebrate the birthday of the President of the Rebounders, Todd Carton….The Dribbler’s international bureau chief spotted Pete and Shirley Mackessy in a pub in Ireland….
  Inspired by Darlene Lehr’s success, Barbara Brady may be entering her watermelons in the October Anne Arundel County Fair….In case you didn’t notice, Peggy Martin has a beautiful voice.  And it’s worth sitting near Marlys Becker so you can hear her sing the National Anthem at Comcast Center.  We have the makings of a Rebounder Choir….Charles Stier reports that he did NOT give his wife, Molly, a fire-pit for her birthday, but rather “a 3-pound lobster, fresh corn, watercress salad and champagne.”  He also noted that his fire-pit is “a bastion for gentlemen who are on the rebound (GET IT???) from their daily cares and woes.”

Here goes….Em Elkonoh, Jen Elkonoh’s daughter made the jv soccer team at Hammond High.  Congratulations!....Pam Prather, Rebounder Secretary, celebrated her birthday in Duck, NC.  No report of which birthday it was!....Darlene Lehr won first prize for her delicious cheese cake at the Delaware State Fair.  Hope she will bring a sample to the Musicale and Dessert….Gloria Hong and George Izumi participated in the shuffleboard singles and doubles competition at the 2009 National Senior Olympics held in California (where they also snapped this photo through a bakery shop window) and will be competing in several events at the Maryland Senior Olympics during the coming week.  Good luck!  Stay tuned for the results….Charles Stier, forever being creative, designed a Stonehenge look-alike fire pit in his back yard.  Was it a gift for his wife, Molly, who celebrated her birthday today?....
