LIVING HISTORY

by Helen Pickens

In January 1989, our son, Tim, was taking a date to the University of Maryland, because she wanted to see the Lady Terps basketball team play.  He wasn’t thrilled about this, and asked Ed and I to go with them.  We weren’t thrilled either; but as parents do, we went because our son had asked us to go.  What a wonderful night out!!!

We found out the next time the ladies were playing, got our tickets and went.  Shortly after that game, we went to our first Rebounders Social.  It was held in a small classroom; there were about 15 people there.  Times sure have changed!

Ed and I used to own a small plane; and that year of ’89, we flew to Fayetteville, North Carolina, to the ACC Tournament.  We took our friends, Ron and Doris Willams with us.  Maryland and NC State played in the Championship game, and I remember the stands were like high school bleachers.  After The Tournament, Head Coach, Chris Weller, talked to us about joining The Rebounders.  We joined, and at our first meeting, I was asked to be President.  I told them I knew nothing about being President, so I was Vice President!

We loved going to the games, so even when we moved to South Carolina for 10 years, we flew back for every home game. We flew to almost every away game, too. Sometimes at away games we were the only fans for Maryland. The Clemson Coach, Jim Davis, would recognize us and come into the stands to talk to us. Coach Weller, introduced us to the UNC Coach, Sylvia Hatchell, and she told us, “Someday I hope we are as good as your team.” (Hah!)

So…that was the beginning, and thru the years, we have been very proud to be Rebounders. I have been President 3 times; and Ed and I probably haven’t missed six home games. Win or lose, we love our Terps; and you can be sure that we will be at Comcast in '09.  See you there, and GO TERPS!
